Two local middle school students, Sydney Sforzo and Chelsea Lea, eighth graders at The Out-of-Door Academy were looking for a way to give back to their local community and help their fellow students. A new charitable endeavor, The Giving Closet, came to life one afternoon when Sydney was cleaning out her closet. The girls realized there were a number of clothing items that were still in excellent condition and could easily be sold at discounted “garage sale” prices for a profit.
Sydney and Chelsea decided all of the money raised from the sale of these name brand clothes, shoes, dresses, athletic wear, etc. would benefit the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund. The Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund provides opportunities for socio-economically diverse students to experience an independent, college preparatory education at The Out-of-Door Academy's Upper School, through a balanced program of academics, the arts and athletics.
The inaugural sales event for The Giving Closet is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 26, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at The Out-of-Door Academy, 5950 Deer Drive in Lakewood Ranch, FL. The sale is open to anyone and everyone in the community and ALL are encouraged and welcomed to come and support a great cause! There are many items that are brand new and have never been worn, so make sure to come early, because once an item is gone… it’s gone! From current donations, it looks like there will be a nice offering of junior through adults sizes (boys, girls, men, and women) available for purchase. Cash and credit cards will be accepted as forms of payment. Check out highlighted items before the sale and get a sneak peek by visiting The Giving Closet’s Instagram account @thegivingcloset.
Sydney and Chelsea are hoping to grow The Giving Closet and host annual or even semi-annual sales each year, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund.
